Dr. Mudit Khanna addresses frequently asked questions, offering insights to enhance understanding of the subject of orthopedic surgery in India.
Though the cost of Orthopedic surgery in India is one of the primary factors contributing to India's appeal as a preferred destination, I would say the quality of care and expertise we offer, is second to none. India offers world-class medical facilities and highly trained orthopedic surgeons who are often educated and trained at prestigious institutions abroad. So, it is a combination of high-quality treatment and significantly lower costs that make us so appealing.
We follow stringent infection control measures and adhere to international quality standards to ensure patient safety. Besides, we have comprehensive pre-, peri, and postoperative protocols for smooth recovery of the patients. We also have rehabilitation programs tailored to individual patient needs to promote optimal recovery and functional outcomes.
As far as the technology is concerned, we have access to the latest technology and equipment. We use the best quality implants from companies like Stryker and Johnson & Johnson, that are FDA-approved.
Robotic surgery definitely offers several benefits over conventional surgery and the biggest advantage is the precision. The robotic surgery allows us to have a very controlled cut, accurate within 0.3-0.2 mm, at the desired level that is pre-decided on a CT scan and planned beforehand. So, the chances of us making an error while making the cut is almost negligible.
The other benefit is the dynamic information we can capture while doing the surgery, so if we record some alteration peri-operatively, we can make necessary adjustments to the pre-planned surgery, thus minimizing any chance of error and further improving the results.
We also get something called Haptic technology with the help of a Robotic system, which does not allow us to go out of the defined boundaries of the cut, which means there is lesser damage to the soft tissues while doing the surgery, thereby helping us to preserve soft tissues and thus helping faster recovery of the patient.
We generally use Smith & Nephew (UK)/ Zimmer (German)/ Depuy (American) implants which are all FDA-approved.
I take pride in saying that more and more surgeries that are being performed now, give our patients a nearly painless experience after a replacement surgery. This procedure used to be an extremely painful surgery a few years back, but over the last few years, we have put together a team of specialists- including a surgical team, anesthesia team, pain management specialists, and pain management nurses, that have specifically looked at how to make the experience of the patient nearly painless and how to improve or get enhanced recovery after the surgery.
Now, how we have actually achieved this- is by the modification of the surgical technique to use minimally invasive muscle-sparing approaches, use of computer navigation to achieve more precision and precise placement of components, meticulous handling of the soft tissues while doing the procedure, and use of a cocktail of medication that we infiltrate all around the surgical site after the surgical procedure has been completed. Besides this, we use what is called an adductor canal block, which essentially is a procedure where we use ultrasound guidance to find or spot the nerve that carries the pain post surgery and then we use the medications or a catheter that we place around this nerve to numb the pain that would otherwise be caused. The use of these combinations of things has made the experience of our patients much better.
I would say that to have a successful outcome from a surgical procedure like a Knee/ Hip replacement surgery, physiotherapy is as important as the surgery itself. However, I would like to add that with physiotherapy, I do not mean any rigorous activities, I am implying a simple set of exercises that your therapist would suggest and teach you; with the intensity of exercises increasing gradually.
Also, the aim of physiotherapy after a joint replacement surgery is to help achieve the new joint a good/ full ROM and further strengthen the muscles, especially for patients who wish to engage in sporting or rigorous activities. This is actually subjective varying from patient to patient and your therapist shall guide you accordingly.
I would say we are the best in this regard- there is minimal to no waiting time- as long as the patient is a right candidate for the surgery, physically fit and all his medical parameters are within the defined ranges.
Yes, logistical arrangements need to be made if you are planning to have an orthopedic surgery overseas in India, however, if you are in the right hands and get the correct guidance from a reputed medical tourism company, it can be well taken care of.
We are very careful in this regard and make sure that our patients stay at least 2 weeks after the surgery, during which they have their rehabilitation sessions and have regular follow-ups to make sure they are recovering well and there are no complications.
Generally, the chances of complications 2-3 weeks after the surgery are almost negligible, however, if there are any late sequelae, we can connect with your GP back home.
Traveling abroad for medical reasons may be challenging. With our experience of over a decade and working with the best surgeons and top hospitals in India, we help make your medical tour easier and safer for you. We will guide you at every step of the way and make end-to-end arrangements for your surgery, travel, and stay.
