What is Endometriosis Surgery?

Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue that is comparable to the lining of your uterus grows outside of the uterine cavity. The endometrium is the lining of your uterus.

Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial tissue grows on your ovaries, intestines, and pelvic tissues. It's rare for endometrial tissue to extend outside the pelvic region, but it can happen. An endometrial implant is endometrial tissue that grows outside of your uterus.

Endometriosis manifests itself in a variety of ways. The most frequent symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain. You may also experience the following signs and symptoms:

  • painful periods
  • pain in the lower abdomen before and during menstruation
  • cramps one or two weeks around menstruation
  • heavy menstrual bleeding or bleeding between periods
  • infertility
  • pain following sexual intercourse
  • discomfort with bowel movements
  • lower back pain that may occur at any time during your menstrual cycle
What are the causes of endometriosis?

Endometriosis is thought to be caused by a process known as retrograde menstruation, according to one of the earliest ideas. When menstrual blood travels back into your pelvic cavity through your fallopian tubes instead of exiting your body through the vagina, this occurs.

Another notion is that hormones cause cells outside the uterus to convert into endometrial cells, which line the inside of the uterus.

Some believe that endometriosis develops in the prenatal stage, with misdirected cell tissue that responds to puberty hormones. Mullerian theory is the name given to this concept. Endometriosis can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics and even environmental pollutants.

Endometriosis stages:

There are four phases or forms of endometriosis. Any of the following could be the case:

Minimal endometriosis is characterized by tiny lesions or sores on the ovary, as well as superficial endometrial implants.

Mild endometriosis is characterized by small lesions and superficial implants on the ovary and pelvic lining.

Moderate endometriosis is characterized by deep implants on the ovary and pelvic lining.

Deep implants on your vaginal lining and ovaries are the most severe stage of endometriosis.

The stage of the illness is determined by a variety of circumstances. The quantity, size, and depth of endometrial implants are all aspects to consider.

Medical and surgical solutions are available to help you manage your symptoms and any issues that may arise. Conservative treatments may be tried first by your doctor. If your problem does not improve, they may propose surgery.

When is Endometriosis Surgery required?

Depending on your age and overall condition, you may or may not need surgery. If any of the following applies to you, you may be a candidate for endometriosis surgery:

  • You're suffering from severe pelvic pain.
  • Medication does not help you regulate your symptoms.
  • You're having difficulty becoming pregnant.
  • It's time to get rid of the growth in your pelvic area.

How is Endometriosis Surgery done?

Laparoscopy Surgery:

Depending on the severity of your case, this procedure could take anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours.

Step 1

You will be given general anesthesia and sleeping medicine. A small cut will be made in your belly button or another portion of your abdomen by your doctor.

Step 2

They'll use gas to enlarge your stomach so the camera can see everything well. Through that cut, the laparoscope will be inserted. Your doctor may need to make further minor cuts for different instruments.

Step 3

After your doctor has checked for endometriosis and/or removed tissue, the instruments and gas will be removed, and the wounds will be closed.

Laparotomy Surgery:

Doctors typically employ laparotomy surgery when they can't treat severe endometriosis using laparoscopy.

Step 1

You'll be given sleeping medication. Your doctor will make a cut through your skin and muscle to gain access to your abdomen and remove the afflicted tissue.

Step 2

Your doctor will close the incision and move you to a recovery area after the surgery.

Hysterectomy

If your symptoms persist despite previous therapies and you have no plans to have children in the future, your doctor may consider a hysterectomy.

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of your uterus. Your ovaries are removed during an oophorectomy. Your doctor will discuss whether or not this step is necessary with you prior to surgery, and they will only do it if you agree.

What is the Recovery after Endometriosis Surgery like?

You may feel tired for a few days after a laparoscopy. Your doctor may urge you not to drive for two weeks. For the next two weeks, they may urge you to avoid having sex or partaking in activities like swimming or soaking in a tub.

Recovery from a laparotomy takes longer and can be more painful. It could take a few weeks to complete. While you're resting at home, you might not be able to do some of your normal activities.

After a hysterectomy, your menstrual cycle will come to an end. If your doctor removes both your ovaries and uterus, you'll enter menopause.

What Results Can I Expect from Endometriosis Surgery?

After a laparoscopy, most women experience decreased endometriosis pain. The laparotomy procedure is exactly as successful as the laparoscopic procedure.

  • I had been having extremely heavy periods for more than 6 months. I consulted a few gynecologists who suggested I may need to remove the uterus, which I was very skeptical about. My husband had heard a lot about Indian surgeons and thought about consulting them. We searched on the Internet and came across IndiCure. They sent us the opinion of 4 gynecologists and all seemed very promising.
We came to India, got a few tests done and finally got rid of my fibroids through a Endometriosis Surgery surgery. Extremely thankful to IndiCure for the excellent treatment and facilities.
