Knee Arthroscopy

Knee arthroscopy is a surgical treatment that allows surgeons to examine the knee joint without cutting into the skin or other soft tissues.

Knee arthroscopy is used by your healthcare professional to:

Diagnose injuries: Your healthcare provider examines any sore or swollen areas during knee arthroscopy. The camera captures photos of soft tissue and bone damage. Your healthcare professional can use the photos to identify injuries (or confirm a diagnosis) and plan therapy.

Repair injured soft tissues and bones: Your healthcare professional will use specifically developed equipment to repair tendons, ligaments, or cartilage if you require surgery. During the process, the camera displays real-time visuals that help your healthcare professional. By stitching soft tissues together, your healthcare provider repairs and reconstructs them. Bones can also be sutured (stitched) together.

Remove damaged or inflamed tissueealthcare professional can shave off damaged bone with the use of some tools.

Common arthroscopic procedures for the knee include:

  • Removal or repair of a torn meniscus
  • Reconstruction of a torn anterior cruciate ligament
  • Removal of inflamed synovial tissue
  • Trimming of damaged articular cartilage
  • Removal of loose fragments of bone or cartilage
  • Treatment of patella (kneecap) problems
  • Treatment of knee sepsis (infection)

A tiny camera called an arthroscope is inserted into your knee joint during knee arthroscopy. Your surgeon uses the images from the camera to guide miniature surgical instruments, which are displayed on a television monitor.

Your surgeon can utilize very small incisions instead of the bigger incisions required for open surgery since the arthroscope and surgical equipment are thin. Patients experience less pain and joint stiffness as a result, and the time it takes to recuperate and resume preferred activities is generally reduced.

When is Knee Arthroscopy required?

If you have a painful condition that does not respond to nonsurgical treatment, your doctor may recommend knee arthroscopy. Rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory drugs or injections are all nonsurgical options.

Many problems that damage the cartilage surfaces and other soft tissues surrounding the joint can be relieved with knee arthroscopy.

Questions to Ask

We at IndiCure completely understand your concerns and it is always our endeavor to provide the best outcome for every patient. Following is the list of questions you must ask before you embark on your journey for knee arthroscopy in India.

  • How experienced is the Surgeon?
  • Which language does the surgeon speak?
  • Is the surgery done in a well-equipped facility?
  • Can you give me any information on outcomes and complication rates?
  • How much pain can I expect, and how will it be managed in the hospital and after I go home?
  • Is physical therapy necessary after surgery?
  • What about the risks involved?
  • Does the surgeon use a certified anesthetist?
  • How long will the recovery period be?

Preparation for the Surgery

Prepare to answer questions about your:

  • Medical history and exams
  • Urinary evaluations

Question to Ask

How is Knee Arthroscopy done?

Step 1

The surgeon will create a few small incisions in your knee called "portals" to begin the surgery. To fill the knee joint and remove any murky fluid, a sterile solution will be utilized. This allows your orthopedic surgeon to see the internal structures of your knee in amazing detail.

Step 2

The first task for your surgeon is to correctly diagnose your problem. He will insert the arthroscope and guide it with the image presented on the screen. Your surgeon will put tiny instruments through other small incisions if surgery is required.

In certain situations, the Whipple procedure may also involve removing a portion of the stomach or the nearby lymph nodes. Other types of pancreatic operations also may be performed, depending on your situation.

Step 3

Your surgeon may sew or use steri-strips (tiny bandaids) to close each incision, then cover your knee with a comfortable bandage.

What Results can I Expect from Knee Arthroscopy?

The results of knee arthroscopy in India are very gratifying. Approximately 95% of knee surgery patients are pain-free. It can be a few months before you become aware of the full advantages of the operation.

What is the Recovery after Knee Arthroscopy like?

Your recovery will be determined by the type of damage to your knee. While a knee arthroscopy recovery is quicker than a standard open knee surgery recovery, it is critical to carefully follow your doctor's recommendations after you get home.

After arthroscopic surgery, most patients require crutches or other forms of assistance. When it is safe to put weight on your foot and leg, your surgeon will advise you.

After surgery, you should continue to exercise your knee for several weeks. This will help you regain motion and strengthen your leg and knee muscles.

You should be able to resume most physical activities after 6 to 8 weeks, or even sooner if you have had ligament restoration. For a longer period of time, higher-impact activities may need to be avoided.

To safeguard the joint, some people must make lifestyle adjustments. Changing from high-impact exercise (such as jogging) to lower-impact activities is an example (such as swimming or cycling). These are decisions you will make with your surgeon's help.

Patient Testimonials

  • Having been home a few days now I can get my thoughts together and give my heartfelt thanks for the support and encouragement I got from IndiCure. Frequently Asked Questions

You'll most likely require 6 weeks to heal. Recovery will take longer if your doctor repaired damaged tissue. You may need to reduce your activity until your knee strength and range of motion have returned to normal.

It's a small procedure that can be done as an outpatient, meaning you can go home the same day.

Knee arthroscopy, in particular, is often effective in reducing or eliminating pain caused by cartilage or soft tissue injury. Knee arthroscopy is preferred by many doctors and patients over other procedures. To use the arthroscope, the orthopedic surgeon simply needs to make a little incision.

The risk of complications following arthroscopic surgery is extremely minimal. If issues do arise, they are usually minor and treatable. Following knee arthroscopy, you may have the following complications:

  • Infection
  • Blood clot
  • Knee discomfort
  • Accumulation of blood in the knee
  • Swelling or bruising

The procedure is done under local anesthesia. Most patients feel mild to moderate pain after the anesthesia wears off, which can be managed by pain medications.

Avoid any activities that cause knee pain or swelling. Climbing stairs or standing or sitting for lengthy amounts of time are examples.

Traditional (open) surgery usually takes longer to recuperate from than less invasive procedures like knee arthroscopy. You'll be able to get back on your feet faster than with traditional surgery because only a few small stitches are required. You may also experience less pain and have a lower infection risk.

Surgery affects everyone differently. Inquire with your doctor when you can resume your normal activities, such as driving and walking without assistance. Your doctor may advise you to wait several weeks before engaging in more physically demanding activities.

People must occasionally alter their lifestyle and degree of exercise. Some sports, particularly those that entail sprinting or jumping, can cause knee injuries. Consult your physician about low-impact sports and activities that are less taxing on your knee.

If you have a complete range of motion, full strength, and no swelling six weeks after surgery, you can gradually resume your previous activities. To move the knee joint and increase knee flexion, ride a stationary bicycle.

You should not drive for at least one week after an arthroscopic knee operation, until the swelling has subsided and the knee motion has improved, but you should consult your doctor to determine when it is safe to resume driving.

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure for repairing the ligaments or meniscus in the knee. The highly advanced treatment has a success record of over 90%.

Sleep with a cushion between your knees and on your back. Crossing your surgical leg over the middle of your body is not a good idea. Sleep with pillows between your legs on your non-operative side. Bend your knees as little as possible.

If a meniscus tear is left untreated, the frayed edge can become lodged in the joint, producing pain and swelling. It can also lead to long-term knee issues like arthritis and soft-tissue damage.

Yes, this is done through arthroscopy. To remove loose bone or cartilage particles that may be causing pain, your knee might be cleaned or flushed. Most people can resume their normal activities within a few days. The recuperation process is usually painless. The procedure may provide pain relief in the near term while delaying more difficult operations.
