Chin Augmentation
What can I expect from Chin Implant (Mentoplasty) surgery?
-
It makes the chin more prominent. It is considered beautiful when, seen from the side, the chin and the lower lip are vertically aligned.
It balances the relationship between the chin and the nose, as regards size and outline. This is why this surgery is usually performed together with a rhinoplasty.
- It can give the chin a more masculine or feminine look, according to the standards of proportion and harmony prescribed for each sex.
Am I a good candidate for Mentoplasty or Chin Implants surgery?
If you feel you have a weak or receding chin and feel you would like a stronger or more defined jaw line, are above 18 years of age, physically fit and emotionally stable, and have realistic expectations, you are a good candidate for the surgery.
How is Chin implant surgery performed?
Chin augmentation can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on patient and surgeon preferences. The surgery can last from thirty minutes to one and one-half hours, depending on the complexity of your case.
The surgeon may use some bone or fat from your body, harvested cadaver tissue, silicon implants or a whole range of other synthetic or biological inserts which may even include specially prepared coral. Some implants are made of solid silicone, generally considered safe by most physicians because, they say, there is no scientific evidence that solid silicone is harmful.
In the operating room, your vital signs will be monitored while the surgeon selects the best size and shape to enhance your appearance. He then inserts it into a pocket under your chin. Or, the implant is inserted through the mouth, along the lower lip.
Usually, the chin is taped after surgery to minimize swelling and discomfort. Sutures are usually removed in five to seven days. Chin augmentation is also commonly combined with facial liposuction, where fat is removed from under the chin and under the neck. Chin implants conform to the bone and are usually undetectable. The implant is generally sutured to bone or attached with titanium surgical screws.
How long is the recovery period from chin implant surgery and when can I resume my work?
Dependant on the type of anesthesia used you may be discharged on the same day or might require an overnight stay in clinic. Swelling or distortion of the chin may last for one or two weeks.
You can return to your work in a week's time and resume vigorous activities in about five to six weeks.
What results can I expect from chin implant surgery?
You can expect a stronger or more defined jaw line, which will give an improved appearance to your face overall. As a result of your new, stronger chin you will feel increased confidence and therefore enjoy a better quality of life.
What are The Long-Term Effects of Chin Implants?
The results are good for life. But some autologous bone and fat grafts can be reabsorbed into your body. Cadaveric bone grafts are rejected in rare cases while your own natural bone will grow into a coral implant. Some bovine injectibles – which require an allergy test – are permanent.
