Breast Lift Cosmetic Surgery
What is Breast lift surgery?
Breast lift surgery or Mastopexy is a surgical procedure commonly
performed in women to reshape sagging or drooping breasts
to give them a firm and youthful contour.
During the procedure for Breast Lift, the areola or the dark skin
around the breasts is also reduced in size, and the nipple and areola
are repositioned in relation to the new contour of the breast.
What are the reasons for sagging breast?
Sagging breasts may result from losing a lot of weight too quickly,
normal age related changes due to loss of elasticity, multiple
pregnancies and breast feeding.
What are the results of Breast lift cosmetic surgery?
Breast lift surgery is quite successful at making the breasts firmer
and more shapely. Many women find that they no longer need to wear a
bra to feel comfortable and look good in their clothes.
How is Breast lift surgery done?
Breast Lift surgery consists of removing excess skin from around
the areola, and possibly also from the bottom of the breast,
with shifting of the skin of the breast to tighten the skin
envelope and insertion of additional volume such as an implant
for added projection and smoothing of the skin. In doing so,
the position of the nipple and areola can be elevated to a more
youthful position.
The specific breast lift techniques may vary, but they generally fall into two categories:
- The concentric (or doughnut) mastopexy for women with smaller and less droopy breasts and
- The more common anchor-shaped mastopexy.
In general, the more tissue that is cut, the more shaping is possible.
The incisions for the Breast Lift surgery varies, depending on the
extent of sagging of the breast and the amount of loose skin around it.
Many a times Breast Augmentation is performed along with Breast Lift
operation. In that case a breast implant is inserted either directly
under the breast tissue or under the muscle of the chest wall. The
surgery for Breast Lift will take about 2 - 3 hours and would require
you to stay in the hospital for a day or two.
Are there any risks and complications associated with the
Breast Lift surgery?
There are few instances of any complications after the surgery. Only a
few patients witness complications like infection at the site of
incision, bleeding from the scars, delayed healing, allergic reaction
to anesthesia and change in the color of nipple.
How to prepare for the Breast Lift plastic surgery?
Your surgeon might ask you to have a mammogram done before the
Breast Lift surgery. Confirm from your surgeon whether you will be sent
home on the same day of Breast Lift surgery. If so, then make
arrangements for some one to drive you home and help you around the
house for the next few days following the Breast Lift surgery.
You should discuss the changes clearly that you would like to make in
your appearance. Because this is a highly personal decision, you'll
want to take time to discuss all of your concerns and desires. It will
also be helpful to show your doctor pictures of breast sizes you like.
Be sure to ask all the questions you have about the surgery.
Your surgeon will also measure your breasts, take photographs, and
possibly require a mammogram (breast x-ray). He/she should also discuss
the new placement of your nipples and ask if you want to reduce the
size of the areolas (the darker skin around the nipples). Follow your
surgeon's guidelines regarding eating a nutritious and balanced diet,
stop smoking at least 2 weeks before the Breast Lift surgery. Inform
your surgeon and your anesthetist about all the prescription and
non-prescription medications, including vitamin, mineral and herbal
supplements that you take and follow their instructions carefully.
What is the recovery period after the Breast Lift surgery?
There will be some degree of swelling, bruising, soreness and
discomfort in your breasts for the next couple of days after the Breast
Lift surgery. This will gradually subside. You will be sent home either
the same day or the next day if all goes well following Breast Lift
surgery. You will be sent home wearing a surgical bra over a gauze
dressing and your surgeon will prescribe you medication to relieve pain
and swelling after Breast Lift surgery. The surgical bra will be
replaced by a support bra in the next few days which you will be
required to wear all the time (day and night) for about a month or so.
You will be able to return to your daily activities in about 2 weeks
time after the Breast Lift operation. There might be some degree of
numbness around the nipple which will gradually fade away. Refrain from
performing any strenuous activities like participating in sports or
lifting heavy objects for about 6 weeks after the Breast Lift
operation. It is normal to be able to resume you full daily routine in
about 3 months after the Breast Lift operation.
